EN Series
EN3B
Introduction:
EN3B, also known as EN32 or 080A15, is a medium-carbon mild steel used for general engineering purposes. It offers good machinability and is typically supplied bright drawn or turned. EN3B is ideal for applications where high stress and heat treatment are not required.
Properties of the Grade:
- Good machinability
- Suitable for welding
- Moderate strength and toughness
- Can be case hardened for improved surface wear resistance
Standards and Equivalent Grades:
- UK: EN3B, EN32
- European: C15, C20, ST52-3, S235
- Werkstoff: 1.0402, 1.0401, 1.1151
- SAE/AISI: 1018
Chemical Composition (wt. %):
Element | Content (%) |
---|---|
Carbon (C) | 0.25 Max |
Silicon (Si) | 0.35 Max |
Manganese (Mn) | 1.0 Max |
Sulfur (S) | 0.06 Max |
Phosphorus (P) | 0.06 Max |
Forging:
- Forging temperature range: 850°C to 1200°C
- Cool slowly in still air after forging to minimize distortion
Dimensional Tolerances:
- Cold Drawn: Best h11
- Turned and Polished: Standard tolerances
Corrosion Resistance:
- Limited corrosion resistance; protective coatings or painting are recommended for applications in corrosive environments.
Weldability:
- Good weldability with standard welding procedures.
- Preheating is not typically required.
Uses/Applications of the Grade:
- Structural components (beams, columns, angles)
- General fabrications (brackets, supports)
- Sheet metal parts
- Applications where strength is not the primary concern
Mechanical Properties (Typical):
Condition | Tensile Strength (MPa Min.) | Yield Strength (MPa Min.) | Elongation (%) |
Cold Drawn | 560 | 440 | 10 |
Turned & Polished | 430 | 215 | 21 |
Physical Properties (Typical):
- Density: 7.85 g/cm³ (approx.)
Heat Treatment:
EN3B is typically used in the as-drawn condition, and heat treatment is generally not required. However, it can be case hardened for improved surface wear resistance.
- Case Hardening: Carburize at 900°C – 950°C, followed by quenching and tempering.
Machinability:
- EN3B has good machinability, making it suitable for processes such as turning, milling, drilling, and tapping.
Available Forms:
- Round Bars
- Square Bars
- Hexagonal Bars
- Bright Bars
- Flat Bars
Conclusion:
EN3B is a versatile, medium-carbon mild steel known for its good machinability and ease of welding. It is suitable for structural applications and general fabrications where high strength is not required. Case hardening can improve surface wear resistance, broadening its range of applications.
